I have expertise in the assessment of micronutrient status, particularly among women, infants, and children/adolescents in underserved settings. This includes the measurement of a variety of micronutrient status biomarkers and their interpretation, including under challenging circumstances like pregnancy, lactation, and inflammation. As such, I am responsible for running the Micronutrient Research Laboratory at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, which supports population-based randomized, controlled trials--primarily conducted at the JiVitA (Bangladesh) and NNIPS (Nepal) population field sites--to assess nutrition and health status through the assessment of biological specimens. I also provide technical support for a variety of other nutritional assessment techniques, including anthropometric measurements and their interpretation with respect to nutritional status, growth, and body composition; and other field-appropriate methods for assessing nutritional status. My work has involved the development or adaptation of questions for trials and observational studies and training of technicians, enumerators, and study managers. My research interests include understanding the causes and impact of poor vitamin and mineral status on outcomes for mothers and offspring during pregnancy, lactation, and throughout growth and development--including how micronutrients are distributed between mother and fetus during pregnancy and mother and infant (via milk) during infancy. Another theme of my work is to understand determinants of compromised growth from fetal life through adolescence, including diet, mycotoxin (i.e., aflatoxin) exposure, enteric dysfunction, endocrine factors that underlie growth, and the potential for early life (e.g., fetal) nutritional exposures to affect growth and developmental trajectories. In addition to work in low and middle income settings, I have worked in clinical populations where issues around nutritional status and growth apply—including children with cystic fibrosis in whom I conducted my dissertation work and children and adults with short stature skeletal dysplasias.
